The Naming is the first book in the Pellinor series by Alison Croggon.
I found this story to be really enjoyable. I really liked the main characters, Maerad and Cadvan, and I like how they are written as having a relationship of teacher/student and being friends rather than a romantic couple. It’s very refreshing when, with most books that I read, the protagonist always has a love interest, which can get boring after awhile.
The story follows Maerad, a young woman living as a slave, who is freed by a Bard named Cadvan. There’s a lot of journeying, magic, newfound friends, and fighting of a magical nature.
I found the plot easy to follow and I really enjoyed it. I am eager to find out what happens next to Maerad in the following book, The Riddle.
